Scottish Fold and Straight nutrition: a brief guide
Scottish Fold and Straight cats are true aristocrats with an athletic build under a fluffy coat. To ensure their health remains strong and their gaze clear, it is important to follow a few feeding rules.
The basis of the diet: food or “natural”?
The main rule: do not mix ready-made food with homemade food. This disrupts the balance of digestion. Choose one of two paths:
- Professional food: Only super-premium or holistic class. They are balanced in vitamins and minerals. For neutered cats, choose special lines for the prevention of urolithiasis.
- Natural nutrition: This is not food from your table. The basis (80%) should be lean meat (turkey, rabbit, beef). Complement it with boiled vegetables (zucchini, pumpkin) and offal. Forbidden: pork, bones, sweets and any spices.
Joint health and the calcium myth
There is a misconception that calcium makes the ears of folds “stand up.” In fact, the shape of the ears depends only on genetics. Calcium is necessary for Scottish cats for a strong skeleton, but chondroprotectors (glucosamine and chondroitin) are much more important for them. They support cartilage tissue, which is the “weak spot” of fold-eared cats.
Weight control and drinking regime
Scottish cats are prone to laziness and quickly gain weight, which creates a dangerous load on the spine.
- Schedule: For an adult cat, 2 meals a day at a strictly defined time are enough.
- Water: Scottish cats often drink little from regular bowls. Use wide containers (so that the whiskers do not touch the edges) or special drinking fountains. Fresh water is the key to their kidney health.
Proper nutrition is the easiest way to give your pet a long and active life.
